What the Summoning Ability and Summon Units are
The Summoning ability is a special ability exclusive to certain units (The Macross, Gundam X). It allows them to sortie Summon Units in battle to fight alongside them.
Summon Units are free units that cost nothing. For all intents and purposes their stats are located in the Hangar, although you cannot purchase them. You can only use Summon Units if, and only if you have the ability to call them to fight for you. An example:
Flash System: Requires NT/EH to use
The Flash System is an inherent item on Gundam X and DX. As long as you meet the rank requirement you can pilot the mech. However if you do not possess the Newtype or Enhanced Human ability, or have an item to emulate it, you CANNOT summon the G-Bits to fight alongside you in a fight.

Summoning Units and Combat
How to summon a unit in combat The summoning phase takes place after your defense phase and before your attack phase. Merely state that you are summoning the unit. Note that when they first appear summon units have *no* attack phases.
As for the amount of units you can summon at once, it is dependent on certain factors. The following chart below is for the G-Bit summon units.
Private Rank- Can summon 1 G-Bit Corporal Rank- Can summon 2 G-Bits Sergeant Rank- Can summon 3 G-Bits Ensign Rank- Can summon 4 G-Bits Lieutenant Rank- Can summon 5 G-Bits
Remember, these are for G-bits; other units have restrictions on the amount of summon units that can appear. Please refer to your unit for these limitations.
Another thing you might want to know is that you can Unsummon your summon units at any time! Of course, they have to be resolved after their Defense Phase, similar to your own. All this and the actual summoning is done in the Summon Phase during your turn.
Attacking and defending with summon units
Now that you've summoned your units, you're probably wondering when you can lead your faithful followers in a gang ra--assault on your unfortunate opponents. To answer that question:
Summon Units' Attack Phase take place after your own
After your attack phase has finished, you then input the attack sequence for your summon units. Simple enough, no?
And on the opposite side of the coin, the defense phase for a summon unit comes after your own. So to repeat:
Summon Units' defense phase takes place after your own. The same for their attack phase.

Summon Units, Resources, and Limitations
What do summon units cost to summon? What about respawning? Unless otherwise stated, summon units are absolutely free to summon. The catch is that you CANNOT summon any more of a particular unit until all of the summons are destroyed.
What if I have multiple summons on my unit (ie: 2 or more inherent summons, or inherent summons and equippable summons)? - If the summon inherent states a choice in the summon (IE: 3) Summon: Gundam Head x 5 (stats in Hangar) or any Death Army variation x 5 (stats in Hanger)), you may only summon all of one of the choices at a time. Once all of the summons have been destroyed, you may resummon the same group, or summon a different group. - If the summon inherent states no choice (IE: 7) Summon: Telgum x 2, Flonse x 2 (stats in Hangar)), then you summon all listed summons as normal. You may not resummon any listed group until all summons are destroyed or unsummoned. - If you have a unit with inherent summons and equippable summons (IE: A Devil Gundam equipped with a Mobile Doll System), then the equippable summons act as if it was a choice. You may either summon the inherent summons or the equipped summons, and may not summon the other until all of the current summons are destroyed.
Can Summon Units dodge? Yes they can, and they're quite nimble at that. Summon units will have their dodge costs listed with their inherent abilities Note that the PCs they pay to dodge come out of YOUR PC total for the fight, so choose carefully if you want them to dodge.
Can Summon Units countercut? This is dependent on the unit. If a summon unit has the countercut ability, it will be listed under its inherent abilities. If a summon can countercut, then it pays 2 EN or 5 PCs to do so. Note that the EN expended for a summon unit to countercut comes out of the SUMMON UNIT'S supply, where as the PCs come from YOUR supply.
Can Summon Units perform support defense? Absolutely not.
Can I support defend my summon units? Yes.
Are summon units affected by dodge or other status modifiers? Unless otherwise stated, yes. Summon units do NOT have inherently locked dodge costs, so high performance targetters, Zero systems, and other weapons can affect their dodge costs.
Can I install items on summon units? No. Even if the summon has any IS, it loses them all when it becomes a summon unit.
Can I repair / refuel my summon units? Yes.
What happens to my summons when I leave the battle? (Destroyed or otherwise) They immediately leave with you as well. No summoner = no summons!
