Somwhere inside the EF Expeditionary's main complex lies a portal, about twice the height of an average human. The frame stands alone in the room - no traffic moves in and out of the portal, and oddly enough, no guards stand watch over it.
A numeric keypad can be seen to the left of the gate. To the right, an electronic bulletin board has been set up. On the board are several messages, one block of text in particular calling notice to itself more than the others.
"Only authorized personnel may use this gate."
Below it, another message is printed in the same font:
"Entities designated as 'Authorized Personnel': Rayearth and all Axial Mainframe moderators. Such persons must input their access code using the numpad to the left before entering the gate."
A third message in the same style says:
"Entities designated as 'Visitors' must first obtain a special access code at the Expeditionary's front office, located on the second floor of this building. Entities designated as 'Unauthorized' or 'Intruders' are not required to enter an access code before proceeding through the gate."
A couple of lines of text appear immediately under. Unlike the rest of the messages, this one was written with a marker directly on the glass:
"Entering an invalid access code or failing to enter a code before proceeding through the gate will set the portal's exit to a random location...less that .00001 AU from the event horizon of a black hole."

[glow=Red,2,300] --- SUBCHARACTER BACKGROUND ---[/glow] - Rayearth (Original)
While many Federation recruits boast Newtype abilites, vast reserves of Super Robot Spirit or extreme martial arts, Rayearth's gift is his sensitivity to magic, known in this realm as Prana.
Having completed his training stage, he currently resides in a branch of the Federation military, acting as a supply liasion. His work consists of ferrying mecha, weapons, and equipment from the factories of Anaheim and Nergal to the battefield.
One may think that this is a tedious and boring job, but Rayearth doesn't think so. After all, he gets to fly the bleeding edge in mecha technology, and occasionally, he gets to fight with it - raiders like to ambush supply convoys. A lot.
The rise to the rank of lieutenant has changed Rayearth somewhat. Several mecha and pilots have come under his personal command - thus, he has to and is fit to lead people into battle. Rayearth does a lot of piloting himself; if he's not on the field inside a giant robot, he's probably closeby, observing and cheering his charges on.
He has even managed to obtain his own ship: the Pony Express, a modified Cosmos-class carrier, designed to support other forces. Pony Express was altered to allow a single person to "pilot" it - in essence, the ship is more like a big mobile armor that can carry mecha. A very, very big mobile armor - Pony Express can hold other ships in its hangar. Rayearth also has several customized mecha, including his signature unit, the PT-503-S Alchemist. Like Pony Express, Alchemist excels at supporting other units on the battlefield - though its weaponry isn't anything to scoff at.
Eventually, Rayearth's affinity with dimensional travel is discovered. The pilot finds himself traveling the universes delivering mecha to unusual places...
- Temperment: From a moderately shy trainee, Rayearth had emerged from his training stage as a mentally matured officer. He's still
unrestrained emotional when in the pilot's seat, however. - Occupation: Federation Test Pilot, Supply Officer
- Preferred Mecha: Masoukishins, Crossover Gundams
- Sabriel (Original/Sabriel by Garth Nix)
Sabriel's first appearance was during the Gundam Fight - after stealing a Gundam F91, she kept stumbling into and getting to battles with Gundam Fighters. Rayearth was among those sent to apprehend the Gundam thief, and after a series of events and not a little amount of help, managed to capture her.
She was brought back to Expeditionary HQ for interrogation, or so Rayearth expected. When Rayearth himself returned to HQ after an extended mission, Sabriel was among a handful of pilots assigned to his command. While this enemy-turned-friend situation shocked the both of them at first, Sabriel soon turned out to be one of Rayearth's ace pilots.
Sabriel is also a necromancer of considerable skill.
- Xen Gustavus (Original)
Along with Sabriel and Makoto, Xen was among those pilot added to Rayearth's squad. Xen is a member of the House/Clan Vasa, a family of aristocrats based in Sweden and also one of the Expeditionary's chief sources of funds. While not the heir to his house, he is still a VIP - at least, in the minds of Rayearth and his superiors, which is why Rayearth is all the more boggled at having Xen serve as a subordinate.
Xen has a quiet, albeit shy temperment, quite unlike the steriotypical aristocrat. Even more, Xen has constantly demostrated piloting that can only be called "genius".
- Makoto Nichiko (Female) (Original/West Eastwood High by Eslington, et. al.)
- Makoto Nichiko (Male) (Original/West Eastwood High by Eslington, et. al.)
At first glance, these two appear to be a normal set of twins. However, from birth, Makoto and Makoto "suffer" from a radical variant of the Gemini Effect - the mental bond between both of their brains is so strong that it is better to describe Makoto as having two bodies and one mind. Otherwise, just a normal person.

[glow=Red,2,300] --- SUBCHARACTER BACKGROUND ---[/glow] - Hikaru Shidou (Magic Knights Rayearth)
- Umi Ryuusaki (Magic Knights Rayearth)
- Fuu Hououji (Magic Knights Rayearth)
The three Magic Knights were seemingly back to their normal lives as schoolgirls when mechabeasts started attacking. They managed to summon their Mashin, this time in defense of Earth instead of Cephiro. The battle was deadlocked until Rayearth (the pilot) stumbled into the area while ferrying a Gundam. Along with the remains of the GM garrison, the four magic-wielders beat back the invasion.
Naturally, the Federation military wanted the three Mashin, along with their pilots, added to Earth's firepower. However, Rayearth's superiors, who desperately wanted to keep more children like these out of the war, got to them first. The girls were "conscripted" into the army, but Rayearth's superiors worked hard to make their status as soldiers as much "in name only" as possible. Rayearth remembered his commander's words well:
"They're still in high school, for God's sake! I know that the Londo Bell has pilots younger than them, but they were forced to join because of crises! Aren't we trying to avoid that sort of thing!?"
This label allowed them to continue living as civilians and require them to fight only in the defense of the city. With a strengthening of the Tokyo garrison, everyone believed that they would not have to fight again. However, though the crisis on Cephiro has passed (or has it?), troubles are only beginning on Earth, and once again, the Magic Knights are needed...
In time, merely defending Tokyo wasn't enough - the girls saw that their whole world was under seige, and wanted to do something about it. To that end, they were placed under Rayearth's command (the reasoning being that the girls weren't really soldiers and Rayearth wasn't really a commanding officer) so that they could train to become better pilots. Rayearth accepted this, mostly because the four of them were all magic users, and he himself might be able to learn more about his abilities. He has vowed to never put them in a situation where they would have to kill enemy human pilots - though, it appeared to him that the trio was unconsciously aware of the realities of war and death.
- Temperment (Hikaru): While perceived as naïve or even immature, Hikaru is a strong and charing character. Quick to defend and protect her friends, she is considered the unofficial leader of the three.
- Temperment (Umi): Umi is the more impulsive and hot-blooded of the three. She may appear snobbish because of her aristocratic origins, but Umi cares for her family and friends deeply.
- Temperment (Fuu): Polite and intelligent, Fuu is the most calm and conservative of the trio. She keeps to herself a lot, but Fuu is quick to help her friends
- Occupation: Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are, of course, Masoukishin Heralds. Hikaru is also the Pillar of Cephiro, so if she is harmed, the planet is affected.
- Preferred Mecha: All of the Magic Knights pilot Mashin. Hikaru's Rayearth is a modified Granveil, Umi's Selece is a modified Goddess, and Fuu pilots a modified Cybaster called Windam.
- Eagle Vision (Magic Knights Rayearth)
Meanwhile, on Cephiro and its neighboring worlds, the atmosphere was similar to that of America during the early years of World War II - listening on the radio about a distant war. Clef and the other hoped that the Knights would remain unaffected by the war until hostilities had run its course. When he learned from the girls that they were actively participating in it (Boy, Tokyo is being attacked a lot lately...) he begged the three to stay on Cephiro. Of course, Hikaru and the others refused, desiring to protect their homeworld - as was their right to, since the Knights risked life and limb to protect a planet that wasn't even theirs.
Clef then asked the Knights to accept an escort; he wouldn't have the Pillar of Cephiro dying on some distant battlefield. This Hikaru allowed - having Lantis hang around can't be that bad, she thought. Eagle, the unofficial ambassador from Autozam, also volunteered to protect the girls, and unlike Lantis, he drives mecha.
- Occupation: Eagle pilots the FTO with his mental energy, so he's more like a Newtype than a Herald. He's also the commander of Autozam's military.
- Preferred Mecha: FTO, but he's less restricted to other mecha than the Magic Knights. He might also act as master of the battleship NSX.
- Geo Metro (Magic Knights Rayearth)
- Zazu Torque (Magic Knights Rayearth)
Wherever Eagle flies, these two will follow - Geo to protect his commander and friend, Zazu after he found out that Earth was the mecca of mecha.
- Occupation: Geo is the vice-commander of the NSX. Zazu is the battleship's chief engineer. Both are Newtypes.
- Preferred Mecha: Geo's personal machine is the GTO, a toned-down version of the Eagle's FTO. As for Zazu, well, he pilots anything with two legs.
- Nova (Magic Knights Rayearth)
Nova is considered to be Hikaru's darker side. She appeared during the Pillar Succession affair, serving the entity known as Debonair. At the end of that conflict, she came to terms with Hikaru and the two combined.
Recently, however, she has appeared again, this time on Earth - once again Hikaru's enemy and perhaps her own agenda.
- Temperment: Nova is the polar opposite of Hikaru. She seeks to destroy everything and everyone Hikaru cherishes.
- Occupation: Masoukishin Herald, though Nova had been known to assume a new class on more than one occasion.
- Preferred Mecha: Nova has her own mashin, Regalia, a darkness elemental.
- Alcione (Magic Knights Rayearth)
Alcione was a sorceress who served under Zagato and fought against the Magic Knights when the first appeared in Cephiro. Believed to have been killed by Zagato, she appeared again as a servant of Debonair. Near the end of that conflict, she was killed by Debonair for aiding the Knights.
She has yet to make an appearance on Earth, but if Nova's here, then...
- Lantis (Magic Knights Rayearth)
Zagato's brother and Hikaru's love interest-somethingorother. Lantis isn't a mecha pilot, but his magical skill is comparable to Master Asia's strength in martial arts (i.e. he can take on most mecha on foot).

[glow=Red,2,300] --- SUBCHARACTER BACKGROUND ---[/glow] - Skuld (Oh! My Goddess)
- Belldandy (Oh! My Goddess)
One day, Rayearth received an order to transport a super robot (one which had an absurd amount of hammers as weaponry) and a Wing Zero Custom to a "client". He found the orders strange, but decided to deal with it when the time came - he's still waiting for both mecha to be built!
- Naga the White Serpent (The Slayers)
A sorceress of undeniably high skill and undeniably huge "mellons". Naga also possesses a laugh with a mental broadcast effect comparable to a high-level Newtype's "Pressure" attack.
- Setsuna Meiou (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon)
Senshi of Time. What's she doing here...?
- Sayuri Isesaki (Idinaloq)
- EIRIA (Idinaloq)
- Irene Tirrel (Idinaloq)
- Formera Cordis (Idinaloq)
- Tomomi Oda (Idinaloq)
The first four are elite pilots of heavy fighters, while Tomomi is a bridge bunny who occasionally sorties in her own fighter. They have no association with Rayearth's group - yet...
